Hunan, once a prosperous province with 22 million

inhabitants, has suffered a great deal owing to

the wars in the interior and to famine. For this

reason a great number of young girls are sold to

become house servants, factory workers and

prostitutes. Payment is made at the rate of one

dollar for every year, for children under ten

years of age. A woman showed me akchild of 3

months old bought for 60 cents. This form of

slavery is recognised all over Chine, even in the

radical province of Kwang-tung.
